Lab 3: Unrolling Patterns

For this lab, I needed to create a object with volume that could be unrolled. I had to consider three things when creating the object: no curvature, single curvature, and double curvature.

I first tried random objects using solids. Combing solids using BooleanUnion and other tools. At first, the objects display double curvature, no curvature, and a object with volume. But after meshing, NERB, and unrolling, the things became complicated even with with the least number of polygons.

When I figured that this would have gotten complicated, I started to experiment with simpler shapes. I still used solids like sphere, box, prism, and others. Since solid objects unrolled differently when combined. That is when I started to only work with combining surfaces and creating volume objects with surfaces.

Using surfaces to create volume objects made Meshing, NERB, and unrolling easier. I first created simple objects with surfaces, but then I created some objects with some purpose and other ideas in mind.

The first one, a pencil holder. The first pencil holder is a volume object with no curvature. I made it using a variety of triangles. Objects with no curvature were the easiest to unroll, since their form does not change when Meshing and NERB. The second pencil holder, had no curvature and double curvature. Curving from the top to bottom and from side to side. I liked the design of this pencil holder more than the no curvature pencil holder. Objects with double curvature have the most unrolling pieces.

The second object was the house. This object has no curvature again, I thought it would be cool to roll and unroll a house. That was a side object that I was curious to create.

Lastly, the pac-man shaped, plant vase. I was thinking about a container to hang and that would hold in dirt and plants. This object has single curvature. I really liked the shape of the object since it looked like pac-man. Single curvature objects are intermediate in unrolling.

After deciding, I picked the pac-man and pencil holder to unroll in real life with paper.

For my 3D printed objects, they are just design in circles from tv shows I watch.
